10. The Human Eye and the Colourful World

The human eye is a remarkable natural optical instrument that helps us see the colourful world around us. In this lesson, students learn about the structure and functioning of the human eye, including important parts such as the cornea, pupil, lens, retina, and optic nerve. The chapter also explains common defects of vision, like myopia (short-sightedness) and hypermetropia (long-sightedness), and how they can be corrected using suitable lenses.

This lesson also explores why the world appears colourful by explaining phenomena such as dispersion and scattering of light. Dispersion of white light produces the seven colours of the rainbow, while scattering of light explains why the sky appears blue and sunsets appear reddish. By understanding these concepts, students learn how light interacts with the atmosphere and our eyes to create the beautiful colours we observe in nature every day.
